Two years ago, the incoming Trudeau Government announced that “Canada was back” and part of that “backness” was going to be a re-emphasis on UN peacekeeping operations. I wrote this article right after Remembrance Day ceremonies that year because amid the rhetoric below, the utter failure of numerous UN operations with Canadian involvement during the 1990s was deliberately ignored or not taught by those who should know better. Emotion-based assertions based on false cultural nostalgia reared up, once again, in the media and in the government. The draft was passed around in various venues but it finally came out in the summer of 2017.
