"Canada in Afghanistan," Policy Options March 2006 The Opposition's attempt to embarrass the Federal Government by demanding a parliamentary debate over Canada's current and continued commitment to the war in Afghanistan has, in the spring of 2006, produced little informed media commentary on the issue. The purpose of this article is to act as a primer of sorts, focusing specifically why Canada is commited to Afghanistan and the various military, political, and development capacities Canada brings to the international effort to support the Afghan government. It is ironic that it was the Opposition that committed Canada with little or no debate, and even more ironic that because of the "dithering" that went on, Canada's default position became Kandahar instead of Herat.
