Abstract:

The confirmation by the Canadian government that Canadian special operations forces were committed to Operation ENDURING FREEDOM in Afghanistan during 2001 stimulated a cottage industry in Canada examining special operations forces and their role in future Canadian national security policy. This article, published in the Canadian Military Journal, was originally a conference paper presented at the Royal Military College of Canada’s second special operations conference in the spring of 2002. It details the historical origins of modern Canadian special operations forces.
